What I think hardening laws would do is repair the effect thus worsening the cause. Which, of course, is a wrong way to go. Hardening laws to maximum extent entirely misses the point that criminals would still possess guns, while law abiding citizens will not, which will render them even easier targets.

The solutions, obviously, is neither banning weapons, nor lifting existing bans. What may work (in a long run) is educating kids from the ground up about the responsibility each of them have in regard to other people’s lives, paying more attention to the process of their education (outside of the class that is) and the way they grow up. That’s where it should start. Neither weapons ban, nor metal detectors in schools would stop a determined person from obtaining a gun if he/she’s so inclined. Nor will it stop from bringing the gun through security checks. Only a very naive person can assume that strict laws would prevent criminal minds to obtain what’s illegal.

Hardening laws may work as “something needs to be done about this right now” measure, but in no way it will solve the problem. Next crazy kid may think “if the gun is so hard to get, maybe I should just blow them up with some explosives”. I’m sure it is very well known that it’s quite easy to build a bomb at home, so next one might be even worse. Let’s not start another arm’s race within the country
